Extremely powerful chemicals have been synthesized to create fragrances that are not available in nature and to duplicate natural essential oils for less cost. These materials have been used at increasing levels over the past twenty years and are the basis for the intense and long lasting commercial fragrance formulations. Ninety five percent of the chemicals used in commercial fragrance are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum.

Being that personal care products plus candles, cologne and other items that contain large amounts of synthetic fragrance have been used with increased regularity over this period of time many people now experience headaches, dizziness and nausea when exposed to anything containing "fragrance".

Manufacturers often combine fragrance oils with essential oils, misleading customers into thinking the fragrance is natural. Also, some essential oils on the market are diluted with synthetic fragrance to reduce manufacturing cost. Synthetic substances may be able to duplicate the smell of some natural aromas, but it is the complex components of each essential oil, created by nature, that determines its therapeutic value and aromatic quality.
